Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carrier (DMERC)In 1965, Medicare was enacted as Title XVIII of the Social Security Act. Both Medicare programs, Medicare Part A, which covers hospital services, and Medicare Part B, which covers physician services and certain home health services, became operational in 1966. In 1993, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), entered into contracts with four carriers to perform all of the duties associated with processing claims for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) under Part B of the Medicare program. These four carriers were designated as DMERCs - Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carriers
